Engine BMW N55B30
In 2009, to replace two brands of engines, BMW released a fresh generation of N55B30 engines. The new engine had an aluminum cylinder block similar to the N54. The cylinder block had cast iron liners and oil nozzles, a crankshaft weighing 3 kg, modified pistons with connecting rods. The connecting rods were now 144.35 mm long. The cylinder head was changed, the variable valve timing system on the two Bi-VANOS shafts was improved.

Frequent problems
- Increased oil consumption. On N55 series engines, failed crankcase ventilation valves are responsible for this problem.
- Periodic ignition damping. Breakage is usually caused by carbon build-up in hydraulic lifters. After checking and adjusting, it is necessary to make it a rule to check the quality of the filled oil.
- Motor shaking. Most likely the problem lies in the malfunction of the injectors. The period of their operation does not exceed 100 thousand km of run. Therefore, it is necessary to diagnose them and, if wear is detected, replace them with new ones.
Units of this series are not protected from the traditional problem associated with the high pressure fuel pump – periodic complete breakdowns. Prevention consists in the choice of exclusively high-quality fuels and lubricants.
Despite all the problems, the overall engine is good, reliable and strong. Differs in a normal resource reserve, is often bought for tuning.
