Engine Mercedes M273 E55/E46
The Mercedes M273 engine debuted in the S-class car in the fall of 2005 and was subsequently installed on the E-, S-, CLS-, R-, CL-, SL- and CLK-class models, as well as off-road vehicles of the ML, GL and G series. family of gasoline V-shaped 8-cylinder internal combustion engines from Mercedes-Benz. It is the heir to the M113 series. When creating the M273 E55 engine, the six-cylinder M272 E35 was taken as a basis, the cylinder block of which was modified for the V8 configuration, the cylinders increased in diameter, a long-stroke crankshaft was installed, the inter-cylinder distance remained the same – 106 mm.

Frequent problems
A Check Engine error indicates a failure of the timing chain toothed shaft or its stretching. However, this is evidenced not only by the indication, but also by such signs: metallic knocking, rustling, decreased dynamics, increased fuel consumption and others. Frequent breakdowns:
- stretching the timing chain;
- leaking oil filter;
- damaged intake manifold flaps;
- failure of the timing chain gear.
The listed problems are not the only ones faced by the motors of Mercedes cars. Problems often arise when the oil pressure of the M273 engine drops or leaks are observed. Also, the magnets on the motors can fail, which leads to errors in the operation of the gas distribution system. The solution in this situation will be to replace the magnets with new ones.
A well-known sore on 273 motors produced before mid-2007 was a manufacturer’s mistake with the intermediate gear material. The problem overtakes motors from 50 thousand km. run up to 150. The gear is worn out, the teeth are licked off, at extreme levels of wear – the ends break off and fly into the pallet. The damper (rubber ring) on the gear is destroyed, which dampens the vibrations and noise of the chain. As the scale of the disaster escalated, the manufacturer released a TIPS describing the problem and its solution in a service environment. This decision consisted in the manufacture of a repair kit for spare parts. It consists of:
- balance shaft with pressed-on gear (balancer and bolt for it) for 272 motors or just a gear for 273 motors;
- outlet manifold gaskets;
- a few head gaskets (heat exchanger, thermostat and a pair of cover rings);
- frontal oil seal;
- main oil seal with cover;
- chain tensioner with ring;
- set of impulse disks and magnets for turning the shaft;
- 2 oil filters.
